Is Protein Powder Halal?

The short answer

Most protein powder is made from whey, and whey has the same rennet question as cheese. So whether it is halal depends on the source and on certification. Plant proteins avoid the question.

Why is whey protein a question?

Whey is a by-product of cheese making. Cheese is made with an enzyme called rennet, which helps milk thicken. The whey follows the rennet that was used:

• If the cheese was made with microbial rennet or rennet made by fermentation, the whey is halal.
• If the cheese was made with animal rennet, and nobody has confirmed the animal was slaughtered the Islamic way, the whey is doubtful.

Most popular whey powders, such as Optimum Nutrition and Dymatize, are not certified. So the source of their rennet is simply unknown.

Which protein powders are reliably halal?
