The short answer
Many granola and protein bars sold in the USA are halal by ingredient, because they are made from oats, nuts, fruit and plant oils. The main things to watch are gelatin, which shows up in marshmallow bars such as Rice Krispies Treats, and dairy proteins such as whey, whose source is usually not stated. Larabar and most Clif Bars are plant-based. RXBAR is made mainly from egg whites, nuts and dates. KIND bars contain no gelatin. Rice Krispies Treats bars may contain pork gelatin, according to Kellogg's. The table below checks each brand.
What makes a snack bar halal or not?
Most snack bars are held together with syrups, nut butters and plant oils, and these are halal. Three ingredients decide the rest.
Gelatin. Marshmallow bars, chewy bars and some fruit bars can use gelatin to hold their shape. Gelatin from pigs is haram. Gelatin from cattle is halal only if the cattle were slaughtered the zabiha way. Kellogg's has said that its Rice Krispies Treats bars may use beef or pork gelatin.
Whey and other dairy proteins. Many protein bars use whey or milk protein. Whey is a by-product of cheese making. So it raises the same question as cheese: was the milk curdled with microbial rennet, which is halal, or with animal rennet from an animal that was not slaughtered in a halal way? Labels almost never say.
Collagen. Some newer protein bars add collagen. Like gelatin, it is made from animal skin and bones, and it is halal only from a halal source.
Plant-based bars avoid all three questions. Bars made from fruit, nuts, oats and plant protein are the simplest halal-by-ingredient choice.

How can you check any snack bar yourself?
- Look for gelatin and collagen on the label. Without a halal source, avoid them.
- On protein bars, look for whey, milk protein or casein. Their source is usually not stated, so a certified or plant-based bar is safer.
- Check each flavor on its own. One flavor can contain an ingredient that another flavor does not.
- A halal mark settles every question at once.

Which protein bars are halal in the USA?

Are Rice Krispies Treats bars halal?

Are Clif Bars halal?
Most Clif Bars are halal by ingredient. Clif says that almost all of its foods contain no intentionally added animal ingredients. The exception it names is Zbar Protein, which contains whey. Clif Bars are not halal-certified.
Are KIND bars halal?
KIND bars contain no gelatin, and they are kosher-certified by the Orthodox Union. KIND's UK team says its products are halal-suitable. In the US, KIND bars are not halal-certified, so they are halal by ingredient.
Is whey in protein bars halal?
It depends on how the cheese behind the whey was made. Whey from cheese made with microbial rennet is halal. Whey from cheese made with animal rennet from an animal that was not slaughtered in a halal way is doubtful. Certification removes the doubt.
