Is Rennet Halal?

It dependsEvidence last checked June 14, 2026

The short answer

Rennet's halal status depends on its source. Microbial and vegetable rennet are halal. Pig rennet is haram. Animal rennet from other animals (usually calf) is debated between the schools — the Hanafi position generally permits non-pig animal rennet even if not zabiha, while others are stricter. Most mass-market US cheese now uses microbial rennet.

The short version

Rennet is the enzyme used to curdle milk into cheese. Where it comes from decides the question.

By source

  • Microbial / fermentation-produced rennet — halal. Not derived from meat. Most mass-market US cheese now uses this.
  • Vegetable rennet — halal, as long as nothing impure is added.
  • Pig rennet — not halal.
  • Animal rennet from other animals (usually calf) — debated between the Sunni schools. The Hanafi position generally permits non-pig animal rennet even if the animal was not zabiha-slaughtered; other schools require Islamic slaughter.

What to check yourself

  • Labels often say "microbial rennet", "vegetable rennet", or "enzymes" (usually microbial) — the easy halal cases.
  • "Rennet" or "animal rennet" unspecified → follow your school's position, or look for halal certification.
  • IFANCA and other bodies certify cheeses where the rennet source is verified.
