Is Pepperoni Halal?

It dependsEvidence last checked July 6, 2026

The short answer

Almost always no — but a halal version exists. Standard pepperoni is made from pork, or a pork-and-beef blend, which is haram. So ordinary supermarket and pizzeria pepperoni is not halal. However, certified halal pepperoni made from 100% zabiha beef or turkey is widely available — brands like Midamar, Crescent Foods, Tahira and Haloodies — and carries a recognised halal mark. So pepperoni depends entirely on whether it's the standard pork product or a certified halal-beef one.

The default: not halal

Traditional pepperoni is a cured sausage made from pork, or a pork-and-beef blend — and pork is explicitly forbidden. So the pepperoni on a standard pizza, or in the supermarket chiller, is not halal. (This is why pizza chains like Domino's, Papa John's, Little Caesars and Pizza Hut serve pork pepperoni in the US — see their pages.)

But genuine halal pepperoni exists

The good news is that certified halal pepperoni is a real, widely-sold product. It replaces the pork with 100% zabiha-slaughtered beef or turkey, seasoned to taste like classic pepperoni, and carries a recognised halal certification mark. Established brands include Midamar and Crescent Foods (US), and Tahira and Haloodies (UK).

Don't assume 'beef pepperoni' alone is enough

A label saying 'beef pepperoni' is promising but not sufficient on its own — the beef still needs to be zabiha-slaughtered and ideally certified. The reliable signal is a halal mark (IFANCA, ISNA, AHF in the US; HMC, HFA in the UK; JAKIM for imports), not just the word 'beef'.

How to decide

  • Standard / pizzeria pepperoni → assume pork → not halal.
  • Certified halal beef or turkey pepperoni → halal; look for the mark.
  • Uncertified 'beef pepperoni' → confirm zabiha and certification before trusting it.
  • On pizza, a halal claim should cover the pepperoni and the kitchen (no pork cross-contamination).

Common questions

Is pepperoni pork?

Standard pepperoni is pork or a pork-and-beef blend — haram. Halal pepperoni uses beef or turkey instead.

Is there halal pepperoni?

Yes — certified halal beef or turkey pepperoni from brands like Midamar, Crescent Foods, Tahira and Haloodies.

Is beef pepperoni automatically halal?

Not necessarily — the beef must be zabiha-slaughtered and ideally certified; look for a halal mark, not just 'beef'.

Is the pepperoni on pizza halal?

At standard pizzerias it's pork — not halal. Some UK pizza-chain branches offer certified halal beef pepperoni (see our Pizza Hut and Papa John's pages).

The bottom line

Pepperoni is not halal in its standard pork (or pork-and-beef) form, but certified halal beef or turkey pepperoni is widely available (Midamar, Crescent Foods, Tahira, Haloodies). Look for a halal mark — 'beef' alone isn't enough.
