Why standard Haribo is not halal
Most Haribo made in Germany, the UK and the wider EU — including the famous Goldbears — uses pork-derived gelatin (E441). Pork and its derivatives are forbidden, and the majority of scholars do not accept the istihala (transformation) argument for pork gelatin, so standard Haribo is treated as not halal. How to tell which you are holding
- Halal pack: look for a halal certification mark, "Made in Turkey / Türkiye'de üretilmiştir," and "beef gelatine" / "sığır jelatin" in the ingredients.
- Standard pack: ingredients say just "gelatine" (pork) — and it is made in Germany, the UK or elsewhere in the EU.
- Vegan pack: labelled vegan, no gelatin — halal by default.
- Do not assume the bag in a UK or US shop is the halal version — it is almost always the pork-gelatin standard unless the halal mark is present.
