Are Starburst Halal?

It dependsEvidence last checked July 7, 2026

The short answer

It depends on the country. In the US, classic chewy Starburst contain gelatin (Mars has confirmed some lines use pork, others beef) — so US Starburst are best avoided unless the pack proves a halal source. In the UK, Mars reformulated Starburst in 2020 to remove gelatin entirely; UK Starburst now use a starch binder, are labelled "suitable for vegetarians," and are halal under the mainstream view. US Starburst Minis (pectin-set) are also gelatin-free.

The 2020 reformulation split the answer by country

Starburst is the clearest example of "same brand, different ruling." A 2020 UK recipe change means the US and UK versions are no longer the same sweet.

VersionGelatin?Status
UK chewy Starburst (post-2020)No — starch binderHalal (mainstream); "suitable for vegetarians"
US chewy StarburstYes — gelatin (pork or beef, varies)Avoid unless a halal source is confirmed
US Starburst MinisNo — pectin-setGelatin-free, fine

United Kingdom: reformulated and gelatin-free

In 2020 Mars Wrigley removed gelatin from UK Starburst, switching to a modified-starch binder with natural colours (paprika extract, curcumin). UK packs are now labelled "suitable for vegetarians," and with no animal-derived or alcohol components, they are halal under the Sunni mainstream position — even without a formal halal logo.

United States: still gelatin, source varies

US chewy Starburst still contain gelatin. Mars customer service has indicated the gelatin source variessome lines pork-derived, some beef — and the pack does not reliably tell you which. Pork gelatin is haram to the majority, and unverified beef gelatin is doubtful, so US chewy Starburst are best avoided unless a specific pack confirms a halal source. The exception is US Starburst Minis, which are pectin-set and gelatin-free.

How to clear it

  • UK: look for "suitable for vegetarians" — the reformulated chews qualify.
  • US: treat chewy Starburst as doubtful/avoid; Minis (pectin) are fine.
  • Neither carries a formal halal certificate, so certification-strict shoppers should prefer certified sweets.
