Is Gelatin Halal?

It dependsEvidence last checked June 14, 2026

The short answer

Gelatin's halal status depends entirely on its source. Pork gelatin is never halal; fish gelatin is halal; beef (bovine) gelatin is halal only if the cattle were slaughtered Islamically (zabiha). Most ordinary "gelatin" on Western labels names no source, so it's best treated as doubtful unless it carries a halal mark.

The short version

Gelatin is a protein set from animal collagen — skin, bones and connective tissue. Whether it is halal depends on which animal it came from and how that animal was slaughtered.

By source

  • Pork gelatin — not halal. Pork and all its derivatives are prohibited.
  • Fish gelatin — halal. Fish do not require Islamic slaughter in any of the four Sunni schools, so fish gelatin is permissible.
  • Beef / bovine gelatin — halal only if the cattle were slaughtered Islamically (zabiha). "Beef" alone is not enough; the slaughter method is what matters. Most commercial beef gelatin in Western countries is not from halal-slaughtered animals.

Why a plain "gelatin" label is doubtful

Manufacturers often combine bones from different sources, and pig skin is one of the most common raw materials worldwide. IFANCA notes that halal and non-halal bones are frequently mixed, so a product that just says "gelatin" with no named source is best treated as doubtful unless it is halal-certified.

What to check yourself

  • Look for a halal mark from a recognised body (IFANCA, HFSAA, HMC, etc.).
  • Look for the source on the label: "fish gelatin", "halal beef gelatin", or a plant-based setting agent (agar, pectin, carrageenan) which avoids the issue entirely.
  • If unspecified, ask the manufacturer for the source before deciding.
