Halal Prenatal Vitamins in the USA

Evidence last checked November 4, 2026

The short answer

The main halal question with prenatal vitamins is the gelatin in softgels and gummies. Ritual's prenatal uses a vegan capsule, algae DHA and lichen vitamin D3. MaryRuth's says all its supplements are free of gelatin and animal ingredients. SmartyPants says its Omegas gummies use beef gelatin, while its Organic line has none. Rainbow Light's DHA softgel uses fish gelatin. None we checked is halal certified.

What makes a prenatal vitamin halal or not?

The vitamins and minerals themselves are almost always halal. The questions come from what holds them together and where a few nutrients come from.

Gelatin. Softgels and many gummies are made with gelatin. It can come from pigs, cows or fish. Pork gelatin is haram. Beef gelatin is halal only if the cattle were slaughtered the Islamic way, which labels rarely say. Fish gelatin is halal, because fish need no slaughter.

Capsule shells. Vegan capsules are made from plant cellulose, often listed as hypromellose. They avoid the gelatin question.

DHA (omega-3). DHA comes from fish oil or algae oil. Both are halal.

Vitamin D3. D3 often comes from lanolin, a fat from sheep's wool, which most scholars accept. Some brands use D3 from lichen, a plant-like source.

This page is about halal status only. It is not medical advice. Talk to your doctor or midwife before you start or change a prenatal vitamin.

Gummy or softgel: which is easier?

Gummies are often made with gelatin or pectin, a plant-based gel. SmartyPants is a good example: its gummies with DHA from fish and algae oil use beef gelatin, while its Organic and Sugar Free lines are vegetarian and gelatin-free. Softgels almost always use gelatin unless the label says "vegetarian softgel." Capsules and tablets avoid the softgel question, but check the capsule shell.

How can you check a bottle yourself?

  • Read "other ingredients." Look for gelatin, and see if the label names its source.
  • Look for "vegan capsule," "hypromellose" or "vegetarian softgel."
  • Check the DHA source. Fish oil and algae oil are both halal; the issue is the shell around them.
  • Look for a halal logo if you want certainty. Few US prenatal brands have one.
  • Ask the maker if the label says only "gelatin."

Frequently asked questions

Are SmartyPants prenatal vitamins halal?

It depends on the product. SmartyPants says its formulas with DHA from fish and algae oil contain gelatin from cows, which is doubtful unless the cattle were halal-slaughtered. Its Organic Prenatal Multi & Omegas is certified vegetarian and gelatin-free, but lists organic natural flavors without a source.

Is Ritual prenatal halal?

Ritual Essential Prenatal uses vegan capsules made from hypromellose, DHA from algae and vitamin D3 from lichen. It contains no gelatin. It is not halal certified.

Is fish gelatin halal?

Yes. Fish do not need to be slaughtered, so gelatin made from fish is halal. Rainbow Light says its Prenatal DHA softgels use fish gelatin.

Do prenatal gummies have gelatin?

Some do and some do not. Some use beef or pork gelatin, others use pectin from fruit. Check the label for gelatin or pectin.

Are there halal-certified prenatal vitamins in the US?

None of the brands we checked shows a halal certification. A gelatin-free, vegan prenatal avoids the main question.
