Halal Gummy Vitamins in the USA

Evidence last checked October 11, 2026

The short answer

Many gummy vitamins sold in the USA are not halal, because they are set with gelatin from pigs or from cattle that were not slaughtered the Islamic way. OLLY, for example, lists some gummies made with pork gelatin and others made with beef gelatin. Halal choices exist: gummies set with pectin instead of gelatin, vegan gummies, and brands that are halal-certified, such as Noor Vitamins. The table below checks each brand and product line.

What makes a gummy vitamin halal or not?

The vitamins themselves are rarely the problem. The issue is what holds the gummy together. This is called the gelling agent, and it is listed under "Other ingredients" on the label.

Gelatin is the main concern. Gelatin is made from animal skin and bones. Gelatin from pigs is haram. Gelatin from cattle is halal only if the cattle were slaughtered the Islamic way (zabiha), and ordinary gelatin is not. Most US labels just say "gelatin" without naming the animal.

Pectin and agar are plant-based. Pectin comes from fruit, and agar comes from seaweed. A gummy set with pectin or agar instead of gelatin avoids the main problem. Be careful, though: some labels list both pectin and gelatin.

Vegan means no gelatin. A vegan gummy contains no animal ingredients at all, so it cannot contain gelatin.

How can you check any gummy vitamin yourself?

  • Turn the bottle to "Other ingredients." This is where gelatin, pectin and agar are listed.
  • If you see "gelatin," the gummy is not halal unless the bottle has a halal mark. Pork or beef, the source is rarely named.
  • If you see only pectin or agar, the gelling agent is fine. Then check the rest of the list.
  • Look for a vegan label or a halal mark. Either one removes the gelatin question.
  • Check each product separately. One brand can sell pork, beef and gelatin-free gummies side by side, as OLLY's own list shows.

What about vitamin D3 and capsules?

Vitamin D3 in many supplements comes from lanolin, an oil taken from sheep's wool without harming the sheep. Most scholars accept it as halal.

Softgels and capsules can also be made from gelatin. OLLY, for example, says its Ultra Strength Softgels contain beef gelatin. Look for "vegetarian capsules" or "veggie softgels" on the label.

Frequently asked questions

Are gummy vitamins halal?

Some are and many are not. It depends on the gelling agent. Gummies made with pork gelatin are not halal. Gummies made with pectin, agar or certified halal gelatin can be halal.

Is pectin halal?

Yes. Pectin is made from fruit, usually apples or citrus peel. It is plant-based and halal.

Are OLLY vitamins halal?

It depends on the product. OLLY publishes a list showing which gummies use pork gelatin, which use beef gelatin, and which are vegan or vegetarian. The vegan and vegetarian ones contain no gelatin.

Is beef gelatin in vitamins halal?

Only if it comes from zabiha cattle or carries a halal mark. Ordinary beef gelatin does not, so most scholars do not consider it halal. A minority accept it through istihala, the idea that processing changes the substance.

Where can I find halal-certified gummy vitamins?

Look for brands that sell halal-certified products, such as Noor Vitamins, and check for the halal mark on the bottle. Vegan gummies are another option, though they are not certified.
