The short answer
Regular Jell-O gelatin dessert is not clearly halal. Its label lists "gelatin" without naming the animal, and Kraft once said most of its gelatin came from pork. Pudding is different: Jell-O instant pudding and Kozy Shack pudding contain no gelatin, though some puddings have other doubtful additives. For a gelatin dessert, choose a plant-based "jel" such as Simply Delish, which uses carrageenan. The table below checks each brand.
What makes a gelatin dessert or pudding halal or not?
These two desserts are set in different ways, so the question is different for each.
Gelatin desserts are set with gelatin. Gelatin is made from animal skin and bones. Pork gelatin is haram, and beef gelatin is halal only from zabiha cattle. US labels usually just say "gelatin," so the source is unknown.
Pudding is usually thickened with starch. Most puddings use cornstarch or tapioca, not gelatin. The things to check instead are additives such as mono- and diglycerides, which can come from plant or animal fat.
Plant "jels" use seaweed. Carrageenan and agar are made from seaweed. A dessert set with them has no gelatin at all.

Verdict key
How can you check any box or cup yourself?
- Look for "gelatin" in the ingredients. If it is there and no halal mark is on the box, treat it as doubtful.
- Look for carrageenan, agar or pectin instead. These are plant-based gelling agents.
- For pudding, look for mono- and diglycerides. If they are listed, the source is unknown unless the box says plant-based.
- Check each flavor and size. Ingredient lists can differ between a box, a cup and a sugar-free version.
Can I make halal gelatin dessert at home?
Yes. Use halal-certified gelatin, or set fruit juice with agar-agar or pectin. Agar sets firmer than gelatin and stays firm at room temperature.
Frequently asked questions
Is Jell-O halal?
Jell-O gelatin dessert is not clearly halal. The label lists gelatin without a source, and a Kraft spokesperson said in 2007 that most of its gelatin came from North American pork. It is not halal certified.
Is Jell-O pudding halal?
Jell-O instant pudding has no gelatin. The vanilla mix lists mono- and diglycerides, which can come from plants or animals, so it is doubtful unless the source is confirmed.
Is Knox gelatin halal?
Knox is plain gelatin, and the label does not name the animal. It is not halal certified, so treat it as doubtful.
What is a halal substitute for Jell-O?
Plant-based jel desserts set with carrageenan or agar, such as Simply Delish, or halal-certified gelatin.
Is Kozy Shack rice pudding halal?
