The short answer
Many fruit snacks are not halal because they contain gelatin. Welch's says its regular Fruit Snacks use pork or beef gelatin, but it names its Fruit Rolls, Fruit Strips and Probiotic Yogofruits as halal compliant. Gushers contain no gelatin. SmartSweets says everything except its gummy worms is plant-based, and YumEarth calls its fruit snacks vegan. The table below checks each brand against its own statement.
Why are fruit snacks a halal question?
Fruit snacks get their chewy texture from a gelling agent. There are two main kinds.
Gelatin. Made from animal skin and bones. In the US it often comes from pigs, which is haram. Beef gelatin is halal only if the cattle were slaughtered the Islamic way, which labels rarely say.
Pectin, starch or agar. These come from fruit, corn or seaweed. Snacks made with them contain nothing from animals.
So the first thing to check is the word "gelatin" on the pack.

Verdict key
The same brand can make both kinds
A single brand can sell gelatin snacks and gelatin-free snacks side by side. Welch's is the clearest example. Its regular Fruit Snacks use pork or beef gelatin, while its Fruit Rolls and Fruit Strips are vegan. So check the exact product, not just the brand.
How can you check a pack yourself?
- Look for "gelatin." If it is there and the source is not halal, skip it.
- Look for pectin, starch or agar instead. These are plant-based.
- Look for "vegan." Vegan fruit snacks contain no gelatin.
- Check the color and glaze. Carmine (red from insects) and confectioner's glaze are avoided by many Muslims.
