Is McDonald's Halal?

Not halalEvidence last checked June 14, 2026

The short answer

McDonald's USA has stated it has no halal-certified restaurants in the United States — its beef and chicken come from conventional suppliers that do not meet Islamic slaughter. Two Dearborn, Michigan locations once sold halal items but stopped after a 2011 lawsuit and $700,000 settlement, so there is no halal McDonald's in the US today. Abroad it is different: in Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Pakistan and most Muslim-majority countries, every McDonald's is fully halal-certified.

The current US answer

There are no halal-certified McDonald's restaurants in the United States. The beef and chicken are sourced conventionally, with no Islamic slaughter and no halal certification anywhere in the country.

The Dearborn story, and why it matters

For years, the only exception was two stores in Dearborn, Michigan — home to one of the largest Muslim communities in the US — which advertised halal chicken.

In 2011 a customer sued after a Dearborn McDonald's sold a chicken sandwich advertised as halal that was not. McDonald's and the franchisee settled for $700,000, and shortly after, both Dearborn locations stopped offering halal food.

So even the single US exception no longer exists — and the episode is exactly why the chain avoids halal claims it cannot guarantee end to end.

Abroad, it is a different story

In a number of Muslim-majority countries McDonald's is halal-certified chain-wide, each overseen by a local Islamic authority:

  • Malaysia (JAKIM), UAE (ESMA), Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Indonesia, Singapore, Turkey, Egypt, Bangladesh, Morocco, and the Gulf states (Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, Oman, Jordan).

So 'McDonald's is halal where I am from' is often true — just not in the US.

Why the US will not certify

McDonald's has pointed to the cost and complexity of changing its supply chain to meet halal slaughter at US scale. Until that changes, US locations remain non-halal.

Common questions

Which countries have halal McDonald's?

Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Pakistan, Indonesia, Singapore, Turkey, Egypt and most Muslim-majority countries — each certified by a local Islamic authority.

Is the Filet-O-Fish halal in the US?

Fish needs no Islamic slaughter, but US McDonald's cooks it in shared equipment with non-halal meat, so most halal-conscious diners avoid it.

Are McDonald's fries halal in the US?

The fries are plant-based, but cross-contamination — and historically beef-derived flavouring — mean many treat US McDonald's items, fries included, as not halal.

The bottom line

US McDonald's is not halal — no certified locations, and the former Dearborn exception ended after a 2011 lawsuit. McDonald's is fully halal in Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Pakistan and most Muslim-majority countries — but that does not carry over to the US.
