The short answer
Pure vanilla extract in the USA is made with at least 35% alcohol, so scholars differ on it. If you want to avoid alcohol, alcohol-free vanilla made with plant glycerin is the clear choice. Nielsen-Massey's Alcohol-Free Vanilla is halal certified by IFANCA. Rodelle says its Alcohol-Free Vanilla Flavor is suitable for halal diets. Vanilla powder is another alcohol-free option. The table checks each brand.
Why is vanilla extract a halal question?
US rules say pure vanilla extract must be at least 35% alcohol. The alcohol pulls the flavor out of the vanilla beans. That is why scholars disagree about it.
The lenient view. Many scholars and certifiers, including IFANCA, allow the small amount used in baking. A teaspoon in a whole cake cannot make anyone drunk, and some of it evaporates in the oven.
The cautious view. Others, such as JAKIM and the European Council for Fatwa, avoid any added alcohol in food, whatever the amount.
Our vanilla extract page explains both views in more detail. This page is about which bottles to buy.

Verdict key
Alcohol-free vanilla: what to look for
Alcohol-free vanilla is made by soaking the beans in glycerin instead of alcohol. Glycerin can come from plants or animals, so check that the bottle says plant-based or vegetable glycerin. Nielsen-Massey, Rodelle and Heilala all say their glycerin comes from plants.
Vanilla powder is another alcohol-free choice. Nielsen-Massey's Pure Vanilla Powder is made with maltodextrin and vanilla extractives, and the company calls it alcohol-free.
Vanilla bean paste is not alcohol-free. It usually contains vanilla extract. Nielsen-Massey's paste lists vanilla extract, so it has alcohol.
Is imitation vanilla halal?
"Vanilla flavor" and baking vanilla can still contain alcohol. Watkins' Original Gourmet Baking Vanilla, for example, lists alcohol and vanilla extract. Do not assume a cheaper or "flavor" bottle is alcohol-free. Read the label.
How can you check a bottle yourself?
- Look for "alcohol" in the ingredients. Pure extract always has it.
- Look for "alcohol-free" and plant-based glycerin on the label.
- Look for a halal logo. Nielsen-Massey's alcohol-free range is IFANCA certified.
- Check paste and "flavor" bottles too. They often contain alcohol.
