The short answer
Whether ice cream is halal depends on the flavor, not just the brand. Breyers has a set of flavors certified by IFANCA, which makes it the clearest choice. Ben & Jerry's and Häagen-Dazs are not certified. They use an emulsifier (E471) whose source is not named, and some of their flavors contain alcohol. What can make an ice cream not halal?
The base of ice cream, which is milk, cream and sugar, is fine. Three things change from flavor to flavor and brand to brand.
Alcohol in certain flavors. Rum raisin, bourbon and liqueur flavors contain real alcohol, and most scholars say to avoid them. This is the most common problem with premium ice cream.
Emulsifiers (E471) and gelatin. Mono- and diglycerides, also called E471, keep ice cream smooth. They can come from plants or animals. Some soft-serve and novelty ice creams also add gelatin. Brands without certification do not say where these come from.
Add-ins. Cookie dough, marshmallow swirls and some colored ripples can add their own gelatin, carmine or shellac to an ice cream that would otherwise be fine.
Plant-based, dairy-free ice creams avoid the questions about emulsifiers and gelatin. They are halal by their ingredients, as long as they are not an alcohol flavor.
