The short answer
Most UK crisps contain no meat, even meaty flavours. Walkers lists no pork in its Smoky Bacon crisps and no chicken in Roast Chicken, and labels both suitable for vegetarians. Walkers Ready Salted is just potatoes, oil and salt. Flavoured crisps are less clear, because "flavourings" are not explained, and cheese flavours contain cheese and whey. None of the crisps we checked is halal certified. The table below checks each flavour.
What makes crisps halal or not?
Plain crisps are potatoes, oil and salt, which are halal. The questions come from the flavour.
Meaty names. Smoky Bacon or Roast Chicken crisps usually contain no meat at all. The taste comes from seasoning. Walkers labels these flavours suitable for vegetarians.
Flavourings. A label can just say "flavourings" without saying what they are made from. Some flavourings are carried in alcohol, and the label does not say. That is why flavoured crisps that are not halal certified count as doubtful.
Cheese and whey. Cheese is made with enzymes, which can come from animals. Whey is a by-product of cheese making, so it raises the same question.
E471. This emulsifier can come from plant or animal fat. If a product is labelled vegan, its E471 is plant-based.

Verdict key
How can you check any packet yourself?
- Read the ingredients, not the flavour name. Smoky Bacon does not always mean bacon.
- Look for "suitable for vegetarians." It rules out meat, but not alcohol in flavourings.
- Look for cheese, whey or E471. Treat them as doubtful unless the pack is vegan or halal certified.
- Look for a halal logo. Plain crisps without flavourings avoid most questions.
Frequently asked questions
Are Walkers crisps halal?
Walkers are not halal certified. Ready Salted contains only potatoes, oil, salt and antioxidants, so it is halal by its ingredients. Flavoured packs list "flavourings" without explaining them, so they are doubtful.
Do Walkers Smoky Bacon crisps contain pork?
No pork is listed. Walkers lists a smoky bacon seasoning made from flavourings, yeast extract and salt, and labels the crisps suitable for vegetarians. The flavourings are not explained, so they are still doubtful for strict halal.
Are Walkers Cheese & Onion crisps halal?
They are doubtful. They contain cheese powder and whey, and Walkers does not say what enzymes were used to make the cheese.
Are Pringles halal in the UK?
Pringles Original is listed as vegan by UK retailers, so its E471 emulsifier is plant-based. It is not halal certified. Check other Pringles flavours one by one, as their ingredients differ.
