Which Chips Are Halal in the USA?

Evidence last checked October 10, 2026

The short answer

Plain chips are halal by ingredient. Lay's Classic, Ruffles Original and Fritos Original are made from potatoes or corn, vegetable oil and salt. Flavored chips are a "depends." Frito-Lay's official list, last updated in January 2023, says the main US flavors of Doritos, Cheetos, Lay's and Ruffles are made without pork enzymes. But the cheese in some seasonings may still be made with enzymes from other animals, and none of these chips are halal-certified in the US. The table below gives the verdict and source for each product.

What makes a chip halal or not?

For a plain chip, there is almost nothing to worry about. The concern is almost always in the seasoning.

Enzymes in cheese powder. Most cheese is made with enzymes. Frito-Lay says these can come from plants, microbes or animals, and that pork enzymes are used in some of its cheese seasonings. Its official list of US products made without pork enzymes includes Doritos Nacho Cheese, Cheetos Crunchy and Flamin' Hot, and the cheese and sour cream flavors of Lay's and Ruffles. That rules out pork enzymes for those chips. It does not tell you whether the cheese was made with enzymes from another animal, such as calf rennet. Scholars differ on rennet from animals that were not slaughtered the zabiha way, so these flavors are a "depends."

Meat flavors and "natural flavors." Barbecue, chicken and some "natural flavor" seasonings can contain ingredients from animals that were not slaughtered the zabiha way. Plain salted chips avoid this problem.

Other additives. Some chips contain mono- and diglycerides or flavor enhancers such as disodium inosinate. These can come from plants or animals, and the label usually does not say which.

The country matters. Frito-Lay's list applies only to products sold in the US. The same brand can use a different recipe in another country, so do not assume that a verdict from abroad applies to the US bag.

Safe by ingredient: plain potato chips and corn chips made only from potatoes or corn, oil and salt.

How can you check any chip yourself?

  • Plain chips made from potatoes or corn, oil and salt are almost always fine.
  • For a Frito-Lay product, check its no-pork-enzyme list on fritolay.com. If your flavor is not on it, ask Frito-Lay.
  • For cheese, sour cream, barbecue and chicken flavors, treat the seasoning as doubtful unless the product is certified.
  • Look for a halal mark, such as IFANCA in the US, on the specific flavor.

Frequently asked questions

Which chips are halal in the USA?

Plain potato chips such as Lay's Classic and Ruffles Original, and corn chips such as Fritos Original, are halal by ingredient. Flavored chips, especially cheese flavors, need a closer look.

Do Nacho Cheese Doritos and Cheetos contain pork?

No, according to Frito-Lay. Its official list, last updated in January 2023, says US Doritos Nacho Cheese and Cheetos Crunchy are made without pork enzymes. But the cheese may still be made with enzymes from other animals, and the chips are not halal-certified. So they are a "depends," not a clear yes.

Are Doritos halal?

It depends on the flavor. The main US flavors are on Frito-Lay's no-pork-enzyme list. Cheese flavors may still use enzymes from other animals, and no flavor is halal-certified in the US.

Why can the same brand be halal abroad but not in the US?

Companies use different recipes and suppliers in different countries. A chip that is halal-certified in one country may use different enzymes or flavors in the US. Frito-Lay's list applies only to products sold in the US.
