The short answer
Most chicken and beef broth sold in the USA is not halal-certified, because it is made from chicken or beef that was not slaughtered the halal way. Saffron Road says all its products, including its broths, are halal certified by IFANCA. Vegetable broths and plant-based bases, such as Swanson Vegetable, Pacific Organic Vegetable and Better Than Bouillon No Chicken, contain no meat. The table below checks each brand.
What makes broth or bouillon halal or not?
Broth is made by simmering bones, meat or vegetables. Bouillon cubes and bases are the same thing, dried or concentrated. So the question is simple: what was simmered?
Chicken and beef broth. Regular chicken and beef broth is made from animals that were not slaughtered the halal way. It often also contains chicken fat. Scholars differ on meat from Christian and Jewish countries, and US certifiers that require a Muslim slaughterer, such as IFANCA, do not accept it. That is why we mark these as "depends."
Vegetable broth. Broth made only from vegetables, herbs and salt has no meat. Check that it does not list chicken fat or a meat stock.
Hidden meat in "flavor." Some chicken-flavored bases contain no chicken, and some vegetable-looking products contain chicken fat. Read the ingredients, not the front of the box.

Verdict key
How can you check any carton or jar yourself?
- Read the first ingredients. "Chicken stock," "chicken broth," "beef stock" or "chicken fat" mean animal ingredients.
- Look for a halal mark if you want chicken or beef broth.
- Choose vegetable broth or a plant-based base for gravies and soups when no halal broth is available.
- Check whey and enzymes too. Some bases add dried whey, which can be doubtful.
Why does this matter for gravy and rice?
Broth is a hidden ingredient in many dishes: gravy, rice, soups, stuffing and sauces. A halal chicken can still end up in a non-halal gravy if the broth came from regular chicken. At restaurants, ask what the rice and soups are cooked in.
Frequently asked questions
Is chicken broth halal?
Only if it is made from halal chicken. Regular store chicken broth, such as Swanson, is made from chicken not slaughtered the halal way. Scholars differ on such meat, so look for a halal mark if you want certainty.
Is Better Than Bouillon halal?
The Roasted Chicken Base contains chicken, chicken fat and whey, so it is doubtful. The No Chicken Base is plant-based and certified vegan.
Is Knorr chicken bouillon halal?
US Knorr chicken bouillon lists chicken fat and chicken stock from chicken not stated as halal, and it is not halal certified. Recipes differ by country, so a halal claim abroad does not cover US products.

Where can I buy halal chicken broth?
