What the evidence says

Seafood starts from broad permission:

Qur'an 5:96 — "Lawful to you is the game of the sea and its food." And the Prophet (peace be upon him) said of the sea: "Its water is pure and its dead are lawful" (Abu Dawud, Tirmidhi and others).

The Maliki, Shafi'i and Hanbali schools read this to permit all sea creatures, crawfish included. The Hanafi school limits it to fish (samak), and crawfish — a freshwater crustacean — is not a fish, so it is not considered halal in Hanafi fiqh (the same reasoning that excludes crab and lobster).

The Gulf-Coast catch: the boil itself

Crawfish matters most at a crawfish boil — a Louisiana and Texas staple. Even where the crawfish is permissible, the pot often is not:

• Beer is frequently added to the boiling liquid.
• Andouille or other pork sausage is commonly boiled in with the crawfish, corn and potatoes.
• Cajun seasoning blends are usually fine, but the shared boil with pork and beer is the real issue.

So a halal diner who accepts crawfish should still ask what is in the pot.
