The short answer
Lobster is halal in the Shafi'i, Maliki, and Hanbali schools, which permit all sea creatures. The Hanafi school permits only fish, so lobster is not considered halal in classical Hanafi fiqh (and, unlike shrimp, most Hanafi scholars do not make an exception for it). So it depends on the school you follow.
The short version
Lobster sits right on the dividing line between the schools — and unlike shrimp, the Hanafi position on it is generally stricter.
By school
- Shafi'i, Maliki, Hanbali — all sea creatures are permissible, so lobster is halal.
- Hanafi — only fish is permitted; lobster is not classed as fish, so it is not considered halal. Most Hanafi scholars do not extend the modern shrimp allowance to lobster.
What to check yourself
- Follow your school: halal on the majority view, avoided in Hanafi fiqh.
- Watch preparation — lobster is often cooked with wine/butter; confirm no alcohol if that matters to you.
