Is Pigeon Halal?

The verdictHalal

Yes. Pigeons and doves are not birds of prey, so they are halal birds. Their meat is halal when slaughtered the Islamic way. Pigeon, often called squab, is eaten in Egyptian, Moroccan, Chinese and French cooking. Check restaurant dishes for wine and for meat that was not halal-slaughtered.

The short answer

Pigeon and dove are halal. The Prophet forbade birds that hunt with talons (Sahih Muslim 1934). Pigeons and doves eat seeds and grain and do not hunt, so they fall outside that rule.

Where is pigeon eaten?

Egypt: hamam mahshi, pigeon stuffed with rice or freekeh.
Morocco: pastilla, a sweet and savory pie that was traditionally made with pigeon.
China and Hong Kong: roast squab.
France: pigeon or squab in fine dining, often with wine sauces.

Does pigeon need halal slaughter?

Yes. Like chicken, the bird must be slaughtered the Islamic way, or lawfully hunted in the case of wild doves.

Is city pigeon meat safe?

City pigeons can carry diseases, which is a health question rather than a halal one. Squab sold for food is raised on farms.

Common questions

Is squab halal?

Squab is young pigeon, so it is halal when halal-slaughtered.

Is pastilla halal?

The pigeon or chicken filling is halal if halal-slaughtered. Check that no non-halal ingredients are added.

The bottom line

Pigeon and dove are halal birds. Choose halal-slaughtered squab, and check French-style dishes for wine.
