Nerds contain no gelatin, so on that point they are fine. However, we mark them "depends" because some Nerds products use carmine (E120) for certain colors. Carmine is a red dye made from insects, and most scholars consider it not permissible. So the answer comes down to the specific product. Check the ingredients for carmine, especially on red and pink varieties. Nerds are not halal-certified.

The short answer
Nerds contain no gelatin, which is good. However, some varieties use carmine for color, so the answer depends on the product.
Why can some Nerds be a problem?
The tiny crunchy candies contain no gelatin, so the usual concern about soft candy does not apply. The issue is color. Some Nerds use carmine, also listed as E120. Carmine is a red dye made from insects, and most scholars consider it not permissible. It appears mainly in red and pink varieties.
How can you check a box of Nerds?
Read the ingredients for "carmine," "cochineal" or "E120." Some products contain it, and others do not. Nerds have no halal certification, so the label is your guide.
What can you choose instead?
Choose Nerds varieties that do not list carmine, or a halal-certified candy without carmine. Many hard candies without gelatin use lab-made red colors instead.
