The short answer
The big flour tortilla brands we checked use vegetable shortening or palm oil, not lard, but some traditional brands still use lard, which is pork fat. Canasta's green-label tortillas, for example, list lard. Many big brands, such as Mission, also add mono- and diglycerides, which can come from plant or animal fat. Corn tortillas and grain-free tortillas like Siete are simpler. The table below checks each brand.
What makes a tortilla halal or not?
A tortilla is just flour or corn, water, fat and salt. The question is the fat, and a few dough additives.
Lard. Lard is pork fat. Traditional flour tortillas were made with it, and some brands and many small tortillerias still use it. It is haram.
Beef fat. Some tortillas use beef fat. It is halal only if the cattle were slaughtered the Islamic way, which a label rarely says.
Mono- and diglycerides. These keep tortillas soft. They can come from plant or animal fat, and the label does not say which.
Corn tortillas. Plain corn tortillas are corn, lime and water. They rarely contain fat at all.

Verdict key
How can you check any pack yourself?
- Look for "lard" or "manteca" in the ingredients. Either one means pork fat.
- Look for "beef fat" too, and treat it as doubtful unless the pack is halal certified.
- Check for mono- and diglycerides or "monoglycerides." If listed with no plant source, they are doubtful.
- Ask at tortillerias and restaurants. Fresh, handmade flour tortillas are where lard is most common.
What about tortillas at restaurants?
Taquerias often make their own flour tortillas, and some use lard. Corn tortillas are the safer order. Our guides to Mexican and Tex-Mex food explain what else to ask.
