The short answer
Plain chocolate is one of the safer categories: cocoa, sugar, milk and lecithin are not the problem. Most mainstream US chocolate bars — Hershey's, Kit Kat, Snickers, Nutella — are halal by ingredient, though few carry formal certification. The things to actually check are narrow: an alcohol-based flavour in a filled or liqueur bar, carmine in some coloured candies (certain M&M's), and the source of an emulsifier or whey. The table takes each brand one at a time.
What can make a chocolate not halal?
For a plain bar, usually nothing — the base ingredients are fine. Three things are worth a glance on filled, coloured or novelty products.
Alcohol in fillings and flavours. Plain bars are alcohol-free, but liqueur-filled chocolates and some "flavoured" bars use alcohol. This is the main flag on premium and filled lines (some Lindt, some seasonal boxes).
Carmine (E120) in coloured candies. Chocolate itself is brown, but coated candies like some red M&M's can use carmine, an insect-derived red that many consider impermissible. The label will name it.
Emulsifier and whey source. Emulsifiers (E471/E472) and whey can be plant, dairy or — rarely — animal-derived. In mainstream US bars these are almost always plant or dairy, but an uncertified label does not spell it out, which is why "halal by ingredient" is the honest ceiling without a certificate.
Not the problem: cocoa, cocoa butter, sugar, milk, soy lecithin and vanilla are all halal. A plain milk-chocolate bar clears on ingredients even without a halal mark.

How to check any chocolate yourself
- For a plain bar, confirm there is no gelatin, carmine or alcohol flavour — usually there is none.
- On filled/liqueur chocolates, check for alcohol in the filling.
- On coloured candies, check for carmine/cochineal.
- A halal mark (IFANCA and others) is the strongest confirmation; most US bars are uncertified but ingredient-clean.
A note on certification
Many global chocolate makers are certified in Muslim-majority markets (Malaysia, Indonesia, the GCC) but sell uncertified product in North America. So a brand being "halal in Malaysia" does not mean the US bar carries a certificate — though the recipe is often the same.

Why isn't US chocolate halal-certified if it's "halal"?
Most US chocolate makers simply have not sought certification for the domestic retail market, even when the same brand is certified abroad. "Halal by ingredient" means the recipe contains nothing haram; a certificate additionally verifies sourcing and the facility.
