Halal Cereal Brands in the USA

Evidence last checked November 1, 2026

The short answer

Most plain breakfast cereals sold in the USA are halal by ingredient, but none of the big brands are halal-certified in the US. The problem is almost always gelatin. It is found in the marshmallow pieces of Lucky Charms and similar cereals, where General Mills uses gelatin from pigs. Kellogg's also says Frosted Mini-Wheats contain beef gelatin, which it does not describe as zabiha. Plain cereals such as Cheerios, Corn Flakes, Rice Krispies and Cinnamon Toast Crunch contain no gelatin. The table below checks each brand.

What makes a cereal halal or not?

Most cereal is made from grains, sugar, oil and vitamins, and all of these are halal. Whether a cereal is halal usually depends on one added ingredient: gelatin.

Gelatin is the main problem. Gelatin is a protein made from animal skin and bones. Cereal makers use it in two places: in marshmallow pieces and in some sugar frostings. General Mills has said that the gelatin in its marshmallow pieces comes from pigs, so cereals with those marshmallows are not halal. Kellogg's has said that it uses beef gelatin in Frosted Mini-Wheats. Beef gelatin is halal only if the cattle were slaughtered the Islamic way, called zabiha, and Kellogg's does not say this gelatin is zabiha.

Vitamin D3 is usually not a problem. Many cereals add vitamin D3, which usually comes from lanolin. Lanolin is an oil taken from sheep's wool without harming the sheep. Most scholars accept it as halal.

No major cereal is halal-certified in the US. Some Kellogg's cereals, such as Corn Flakes, are certified halal in Muslim-majority countries. The US versions are not certified, so "halal" in the table means halal by ingredient.

A quick rule: if a cereal has marshmallows or a sugar frosting on each piece, check for gelatin. Plain flakes, puffs, rings and squares almost never contain it.

How can you check any cereal yourself?

  • Read the ingredient list for the word gelatin. If it is there, the cereal is not halal unless the gelatin is certified halal.
  • Be extra careful with marshmallow cereals and frosted cereals. These are where gelatin appears.
  • Check each flavor separately. Plain Froot Loops have no gelatin, but Froot Loops with Marshmallows do.
  • Recipes change, so read the label again instead of trusting an old list.

What are good halal cereal choices?

Plain cereals without marshmallows or frosting are the safest choices. Original Cinnamon Toast Crunch lists no gelatin and no flavorings. Kellogg's Corn Flakes and Rice Krispies have no gelatin but contain malt flavor, so check the table before choosing them. If you want a sweet frosted wheat cereal, look for a store brand whose label lists no gelatin.

Frequently asked questions

Which cereals are halal in the USA?

Original Cinnamon Toast Crunch has no gelatin and no flavorings, so it is halal by ingredient. Kellogg's Corn Flakes and Rice Krispies contain malt flavor, and regular Froot Loops contain natural flavor. Their sources are not stated, so these cereals depend on them. None of these cereals is halal-certified in the US.

Why are Lucky Charms not halal?

The marshmallow pieces in Lucky Charms are made with gelatin. General Mills has said that this gelatin comes from pigs, so Lucky Charms are not halal.

Do Frosted Mini-Wheats contain pork?

No, but they do contain gelatin. Kellogg's has said that the gelatin in Frosted Mini-Wheats is beef gelatin. Kellogg's does not say it comes from zabiha cattle, so most scholars do not consider it halal.

Is the vitamin D3 in cereal halal?

Usually, yes. The vitamin D3 in cereal usually comes from lanolin, an oil from sheep's wool. The sheep is not harmed or slaughtered, and most scholars accept it as halal.

Are marshmallow cereals ever halal?

Only if the marshmallows are made without gelatin or with certified halal gelatin. The big US brands use regular gelatin, so their marshmallow cereals are not halal.
