Is Fish Halal?

HalalEvidence last checked November 3, 2026
The verdictHalal

Yes. Fish is halal in all four Sunni schools, and it needs no Islamic slaughter. The Quran says the game of the sea is lawful (5:96). The schools differ about other sea creatures, such as shrimp, crab and squid, and the Shia (Ja'fari) view allows only fish with scales. When you eat out, check for wine in the sauce, beer in the batter and shared fryers.

The short answer

Fish is halal. The Quran says the game of the sea and its food are lawful (5:96). When the Prophet was asked about wudu with sea water, he said its water is pure and its dead are lawful. Fish is the one animal food that does not need Islamic slaughter.

Do all the schools agree?

On fish, yes. On other sea creatures, no.

ViewFishOther sea creatures (shrimp, crab, squid)
Shafi'i, Maliki, HanbaliHalalGenerally halal
HanafiHalalOnly fish, though most modern Hanafi scholars allow shrimp
Shia (Ja'fari)Only fish with scalesShrimp allowed; most others not

So salmon, tuna, cod, tilapia and other common fish are halal in every Sunni school. Fish without scales, such as catfish, are halal for Sunnis but avoided by Shia Muslims who follow the scales rule.

Does fish need to be slaughtered?

No. A fish caught from the water is halal without slaughter or saying God's name. Scholars differ about a fish found already dead and floating: the Hanafi school dislikes it, and the Ja'fari view requires the fish to be caught alive or to die in the net.

What should you check when eating fish out?

  • Wine and sake in sauces and glazes, common in French, Italian and Japanese cooking.
  • Beer batter on fried fish.
  • Shared fryers used for pork or non-halal chicken.
  • Fish sauce and dashi in Asian dishes are fish-based and usually halal, but check for added alcohol.

What about fish products?

  • Fish gelatin is halal, and a common halal alternative to pork gelatin.
  • Fish oil and omega-3 capsules are halal by source, but check whether the capsule is made from pork gelatin.
  • Caviar and roe follow the fish they come from.
  • Imitation crab is made from fish but may contain other ingredients, so check the label.

Common questions

Is canned tuna halal?

Tuna is halal. Check the label for added ingredients, such as broth or flavorings from non-halal sources.

Is salmon halal?

Yes. Salmon is a fish with scales, so it is halal in every school.

Is smoked or raw fish halal?

Yes. The fish is halal however it is prepared, as long as nothing non-halal is added. Raw fish carries food-safety questions, not halal ones.

Is fish from a non-halal restaurant halal?

The fish itself is halal. The questions are the cooking: wine, beer, lard and shared fryers.

The bottom line

Fish is halal and needs no slaughter. The schools differ on other seafood, and the Shia view adds the scales rule. When eating out, the fish is rarely the problem: the batter, sauce and fryer are what to check.
