Frozen and prepared meals: halal status
Frozen and prepared meals combine many ingredients, and several of them can hide the details that decide whether a meal is halal. A label may list "chicken" or "beef" without saying how the animal was slaughtered. Sauces and gravies are often made with meat stock, and seasonings or "natural flavors" can include meat extracts. Other questions add up quickly. Cheese in pizzas and pasta dishes raises the rennet question, some sauces are made with wine, and emulsifiers such as mono- and diglycerides can come from animal fat. A long ingredient list gives more places for a doubtful item to appear. Because so much of this is not visible on the label, the scanner treats prepared meals as high-risk. Without a valid halal certificate that we have checked for the product, the best result it can give is Doubtful. Meals with no meat at all are often simpler, but still check the cheese, the flavorings and any wine in the sauce, and the scanner will name each unclear ingredient for you. Dedicated halal brands with a checked certificate are the most reliable choice, and the scanner shows their certifier's slaughter standard next to the result.
Prepared meals often contain meat, broth or flavorings whose animal source and slaughter method are not shown on the label. Without a valid halal certificate for this product, we cannot say more than Doubtful.
