Ordering halal Mediterranean food: what to check

Mediterranean menus of kebabs, shawarma, gyros, falafel and hummus are often halal, but "Mediterranean" also covers Greek and other kitchens where pork and wine are normal. The label alone does not tell you how the meat was sourced.

  • Gyro cones are usually bought pre-made from a supplier, and both halal and non-halal versions are sold. Ask about the gyro meat specifically, not just the chicken.
  • Is any pork (for example pork souvlaki) on the menu or cooked on the same grill?
  • Is wine or other alcohol served, or used in cooking?
  • Falafel and other vegetarian dishes are often shared with the meat fryer. Ask if that matters to you.

This is general guidance, not a ruling. Each listing above shows what we have confirmed for that restaurant. What halal means for food
