Ordering halal Indian food: what to check

Indian restaurants are not halal by default. Many are not Muslim-owned, and some serve halal meat for only part of the menu, for example halal lamb or goat but not chicken. Vegetarian dishes are plentiful, but the kitchen and oil may be shared.

  • Is all of the meat halal, or only some items? Ask about chicken, lamb and goat separately.
  • Is alcohol served? It commonly is at Indian restaurants.
  • Is pork or beef on the menu, and are they cooked in the same pans or tandoor?
  • Ask whether the chicken is hand-slaughtered (zabiha) or machine-slaughtered. Restaurants often buy chicken and red meat from different suppliers, and some diners accept only hand-slaughtered poultry.
